Central Banker Desperation

Miles Franklin sponsored this article by Gary Christenson. The opinions are his.

Like living in quiet desperation, holding on with our fingertips, scared we are losing our grip on the slippery mountain, on reality, on what little control we possess… central banks and governments are desperate.

Some are doing well, unless they worry the Jeffery Epstein fiasco will implicate them. But for many, it’s desperation, insecurity and debts.

Central bankers, governments and stock markets are worried, even desperate.

Their “feel good” stories about fiat currencies, stocks always rise, bonds represent good value, the economy is doing great, the elite manage well, Wall Street cares about “the little guy,” deficits don’t matter, debts can increase forever… are wearing thin. The truth will surface.

2019 looks like an end to the economic cycle, the beginning of the end of decades of fiscal and monetary nonsense, an uptick in fear and desperation.

But since governments and bankers created the fiscal and monetary problems, it is likely they’ll generate different nonsense, but not return to the sanity of honest money, accountability, and the rule of law.

The NASDAQ 100 reached an all-time high on July 26, 2019.

The DOW hit an all-time high on July 16, 2019. This has been an impressive run, levitated by central bank liquidity and corporate stock buy backs.

The Japanese Nikkei 225 topped on October 2, 2018.

Dow Transports hit their high on September 14, 2018 and have NOT confirmed the new DOW high. Problem!

The Russell 2000 hit its high on August 31, 2018. Broad markets are not confirming new highs in the Dow, Nasdaq 100 or the S&P 500 Index.

German DAX peaked on January 23, 2018.

Shanghai Composite hit its high on June 12, 2015.

The U. S. stock markets are “running on fumes.” Perhaps the-powers-that-be can, once again, levitate a few indexes to higher levels, but most indexes and individual stocks hit their highs long ago. Result: end-of-cycle desperation, “happy talk,” distractions, and rate cuts by The Fed.

Read the excellent “Hitting the Wall” by Sven Henrich.

“There is no history, none, that supports stock market capitalizations above 145% of GDP for an extended period of time. None.

“There is also no history, none, that suggests unemployment can stay this low for an extended period of time. None.

“And there certainly is no history [that] suggests that BOTH can be maintained for an extended period to time concurrently.”

The entire Swiss yield curve, out to 50 years, shows negative yield.

The entire German yield curve dropped below zero for the first time.

Over $16 trillion in sovereign debt “pays” negative interest. It costs you to loan capital to insolvent sovereign governments—for 30 to 50 years—and they guarantee to repay you with depreciated currency units worth less than when you sunk your capital into the black hole of government finance. Craziness.

Insanity or desperation… or front running the bond market assuming rates will move more negative in bankers’ desperate quest for stimulus. This sounds like desperation, fear, and misguided hope driving bizarre decisions in a flawed system. Some would claim our governments and central banks know what they are doing. Others disagree.

Politicians buy votes by promising more benefits and free stuff. War mongers promote forever wars. Candidates want to forgive student loan debt, promise Medicare for all, free college tuition, and many more, all paid via MMT and debt financing. The Magic Money Tree theory of economics is gaining traction, a sign of desperation. As Bill Bonner says,

“It [MMT] is a simpleton’s idea… which makes it suitable for both Democrats and Republicans. But it totally ignores how a real economy works…”

U.S. wealth inequality reached all-time highs according to many sources. Many in the bottom 90% of the U.S. are living with a desperate fear of economic catastrophe.

Government inflation statistics sell the story of low consumer price inflation. Many, probably most, people realize the low inflation statistics are nonsense, but we soldier on ignoring the phony statistics, happy talk and official un-truths. When government employees and Deep State proponents are desperate to maintain their wealth transfer game, they lie.

Local, state, private and government sponsored pension plans are underfunded. The funding shortfall grew during the last ten years of economic stimulus and stock market rallies. Some pension plans will implode in a recession. End-of-cycle times call for desperate measures. Will those measures involve government bailouts, failed promises, pension reductions, and cancelled health insurance? Our feelings of desperation will increase.

People, local governments, states and sovereign governments are desperate to create debt, increase spending, pay for excessive pension promises, add benefits, pay the interest on existing debt and survive.

From Zerohedge: “Apple Suspends Program That Records Users Having Sex and Buying Drugs.” Signs of desperation, user apathy, and intrusive nonsense…

A Berkeley, California couple were raising an eight-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy. Both children decided to change their gender. The parents supported their decisions. Now the parents are raising an eleven-year-old girl who transitioned to a boy, and a seven-year-old boy who transitioned to a girl. They will soon begin treatments with hormone blockers and hormones. Many people see examples such as this as end-of-the-cycle craziness in attitudes and behavior.

  • The Fed lowered interest rates, a sign of desperation.
  • $16 trillion in sovereign debt charges lenders for the “privilege” of loaning capital to nearly insolvent governments.
  • MMT and larger deficits are viewed by many as “normal,” but we see them as symptoms of desperation.
  • Most stock markets peaked over a year ago. The NASDAQ 100 and DOW peaked recently. Trouble lies ahead in September, October and November!
  • Pension plans: We are ten years into a “recovery,” but they are increasingly underfunded. The coming recession will crush some, perhaps many pension plans.
  • Stock markets have been levitated by inexpensive debt enabling stock buybacks. It works until it stops, which could be soon.
  • Stock market capitalization to GDP registers in the danger zone.
  • Margin debt is flashing a warning signal.
  • The Empire State Index and Chicago PMI fell hard. Trouble lies ahead!

Silver prices are showing signs of life after their peak eight years ago. Silver has no counter-party risk and is undervalued.

  1. The quite smart lady is suggesting the impossible, forgiveness.
“Global Vampire Squid” of the central banksters would NEVER agree to that at all, so like the FED created boom bust cycle there is only one possible choice. A monster world wide default. Sub prime cars,, still around to enable car sales, but the new new biggie is corporate sub primes for Trillions.
My favorite is of course Tesla. Big banks could sell their convertible’s paying
6-8% as the conversion was always going to be wonderful at some multiple.
OOPS, now that stock is $220 or so down 30% or so buyers see reality.
Buffet’s quip on seeing who is swimming naked when tide goes out!!

  2. As Rosenburg said on BNN.

MMT is really about debt forgiveness. At some a reset happens and debt forgiveness happens. Gold and its derivative has no upper bounds at that point.

One must remember gold at 5000 is not a great day. It’s a zombie apocalypse.
Gold bugs always get it wrong. You should be hoping for 300 gold not 5000. At 5000 you are eating your neighbor or firing rockets at them.

The fiat money system allows all the commitments of government to be met. A gold standard takes us back to the stone age.
Yes socialism is dying – we know that.

    But do you want chaos.
Gold bugs seem to not understand this or how our modern system works.
We will never be on a gold standard as it limits government.
E-currency will be order of the day where every transaction is recorded and taxed.

    • Thanks for your comment.
I think you are saying we have a doomed system and much higher gold is a disaster, not a natural recognition of excessive currency printing. Gold at $5000 is three times what it is today. Gold in 1971 was $42. Three times that was $126. Not a problem. Let the price of gold rise to reflect the excesses of “printing” and debt. If there is a zombie apocalypse, it won’t be caused by higher gold prices.

  3. Bill Bonner is a fool. MMT is PRECISELY a description of how the existing economy actually functions. It is not a hypothesis. It can be seen as a lens with which to examine the current fiat based economy. So, let’s start with the Constitution. It empowers the Federal government with its unique right to “coin money” Nobody else can legally do it except empowered by the federal government[the banks have that right] Because of that right it can always buy its debts and never must borrow or save money. It can theoretically spend to infinity [less 1$] It’s not, like Mnuchin just said, running short of money. There is a practical limit and that is a shortage of resources and services available to buy. In the current austerity regime that limit is $trillions off in the distance. Then also resulting from being sovereign, taxation does not raise [federal] revenue. Tax has uses but not to fund even $1 of spending. All this is within the existing economy and should be nothing new . Yet the PTB have confused everybody with falsehoods and lies, to their own ends. It’s past time to wake up. MMT gives us the truth, and that will triumph[eventually!] The current mess shown in your article here will speed up the changes needed.

  4. QE is not, any, attempt to heal the situation, but solely delayed filing for involvency. QE is pure “muscle” money. Domination. The act of “dirty” Central Bankers! The PowerMatrix is the “Licence to Print Money”, resp. “Liquidity”! What else!?
The FED compares to James Bond (Licence to kill)! For example the AU/AG market! Let’s have fun! A simple metaphor. Everybody, goes for: Monopoly, the board game! Ea. Player get’s the same amount of cash! Skills, Strategies and Pure Luck (dices) makes: The Winner Is!
Now, imagine, 1x (The One & Only) of the Players could emit new currency , (paper money) during the game! He would, NEVER, be beaten! Got it !??
Proof: Through the rally of AU/AG in the last days of 20%, plus. there must have happened some servere “queeze” for “comercials”. Nothing heard !??
Ask why !? If you are 1x of the “Printing Crowd” it does not matter, how much paper money you loose! Gary, give me a comment on this, pls !!!
